Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Mobile Scholastic Support Unit Supervisor, the Activities Specialist is responsible for the organization and implementation of activities related to the Mobile Scholastic Support Center as part of the Y on the Fly Initiative. The Activities Specialist ensures that direct program implementation is carried out in manner that delivers exceptional service to program participants and funders.

This is a seasonal summer position from May - August

Pay Rate:

$13.00 - $14.00/hr

Mobile Scholastic Support Center Program Description:

The YMCA of Central Stark County identifies that there is a significant need for safe learning spaces for middle school and high school students in the city of Canton. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Canton City School District instituted a mandatory hybrid learning model, part in person and part virtual learning, for students in grades six and above. This leaves the most vulnerable of students without safe and connected learning spaces three days per week. Under the umbrella of the Y on the Fly Initiative, the YMCA will meet these students where they are in the community and provide positive adult interaction, internet accessibility, engaging and active programming, educational support and a new sense of community. Each visit is 2 hours.


Job Specifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and staff-management skills
  • Ability to educate and motivate staff, members, volunteers and community about YMCA mission
  • Excellent fiscal management with strong operational performance history
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Google and Social Media
  • Hours vary depending on need, including weekends and evenings.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • This position prefers an undergraduate degree, but not required.
  • Will consider experience in lieu of degree
  • Two years experience in the area of youth development, education, social services, Community outreach
  • The incumbent is required to maintain current CPR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Must complete the on-line YMCA New Employee Orientation available on the YMCA Link
  • Valid Ohio Driver s license

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitate daily activities of the Mobile Scholastic Center. This may include homework assistance, snacks, scheduling, collaborations with other agencies, and tutoring services.
  • Monitors the achievement of objectives through measurable outcomes, taking appropriate action to see they are met.
  • Evaluates current program delivery model and participation to expand or discontinue locations based on customer satisfaction and funders satisfaction.
  • Maintains an accurate system of records and reports.
  • Demonstrates the "Character Counts" values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
  • Participates in training and abide by the policies of the YMCA of Central Stark County
  • Provides a cohesive approach to customer service and training that directly impact the end users' commitment and personal growth.
  • Builds a culture of service delivery that is reflective of the Y mission and responsive to member issues and needs.
  • Assists in forming community partnerships to expand Y Without Walls concept.
  • Conduct ongoing safety inspections.
  • Local travel required and occasional long distance travel for training and special events.
  • All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
